Trading 101

By Alvin Leadbetter

Welcome to trading 101, since many players are new to FPS Fbpro in the No Pressure League, I decided to write this little tutorial in helping you make decisions on whether trades are a good deal, or a Really bad one.  While the following system is no where near perfect, it should help some of you get going on the trading circuit.  I once read another article on using a point system to trade with, and thought it was a good idea, so I will be attempting to give you a point system to use in this article.  Writing is not my specialty (What is I don't know), so excuse the bad grammar, broken sentences, etc..................

First and I can't stress this enough, Never take the first offer for a player, Look it over and make a counter Offer.  Teasm do not get rid of players without a reason.  While I seldom worry about a players actual Game Statistics, some player do seem to be Classic over achievers and others, under achievers.  I'd use as a last resort stat though.  The Players Ratings are the Key.

When I look at a player I fire up Raffie's Roster Breakdown, or Sullivans Fbedit Deluxe.  I look over the ratings of the individual players, and more importantly to me I look at what Raffie's gives the player for a rating.  This number is determined by information you put in to weight the players Ratings by.  I'll give you what I use at the end of this Tutorial!

So here is the fun part, Weighing the players (No not to see if they are overweight, but to see what they are worth.)

Assign them points as follows:

bulletTotal Rating of player
bulletIf he is a Starter add 1000
bulletIf he is a Backup that will get playing time add 500
bulletIf he is a reserve player, he gets nothing
bulletEndurance Add 100 for each point over 80, subtract 50 for each point under 70
bulletIf he is a 1 - 3 year player Add 500
bulletIf he is a 4 - 6 year player Add 0
bulletIf he is a 7 - 9 year player Subtract 250
bulletIf he is a 10+ year player Subtract 500 and buy him Several Cases of Ensure!
bulletImpact Player award.  If this guy is so much better than all players you have at that position give him a bonus to reflect that.
bulletDesperation (Add what you feel for a desperation situation i.e. your starter gone for the year and you have to have a replacement.

Points for Picks:

bullet1st Round Pick 5900
bullet2nd Round Pick 5300
bullet3rd Round Pick 4900
bullet4th Round Pick 4500
bullet5th Round Pick 3900
bullet6th Round Pick 3400
bullet7th Round Pick 3000

Note:  Obviously very few players would be worth two of the above picks if added together, but we all know 2 7th round picks will never have the Impact of 1 First rounder :<   When adding picks together in this way I would recommend using only half of the 2nd picks worth!

So how does this system actually work when used.  Well for examples I took the trades currently done this season in NPL and compared them! One note about my Figures, I am figuring them based ont he worth to the team they are presently on, your figures should differ taking into account depth chart before traded!

CB3  36  Tate Withycombe       OK   6   0-0    0  77 81 80 63 73 76 59 66

for

A  LB3  74  Brendan McCarthy   OK   7   0-0    0  75 55 76 77 68 60 82 72

Looks like Cedar Rapids made out slightly better in this trade!

A  HB1  31  Lee Wheeler           OK   R   6-0  179  82 82 89 73 66 84 59 62

A  G1   65  Gene Horne            OK   4   6-1  281  57 51 54 81 68 72 62 81

for

A  CB1  26  Armand Williams       OK   3   0-0    0  86 83 84 75 68 76 67 62

A  LB5  52  Darius Peglow        Q-3  10   0-0    0  70 62 60 72 54 63 55 52

This deal looks like it was well in favor of New Jersey, but factoring in Bangor's Desperate need for Db's might make it seem a little closer!

A  HB1  28  Jimmy Hawkins      OK   3   0-0    0  89 80 86 83 74 87 69 73

for

A  CB1  23  Jamie Klein           OK   1   0-0    0  82 86 84 80 82 69 69 76

A  C1   67  Mark Bond             OK   4   0-0    0  58 63 58 81 73 70 67 86

For

A  C2   59  Tony Case             OK   5   0-0    0  51 54 51 77 63 63 51 65

And a 2nd Pick

Clearly Oakland seemed to have come out ahead in this trade, the score would even be more lopsided if Houston did not need Bond to Start for the injured Regular starter, that's why I have the / scores.

A  QB2   3  Quinn Bullock         OK   R  5-10  206  72 57 64 89 59 61 78 70

for

A  QB2   2  Skip Williams         OK   R   6-1  212  57 46 53 74 57 58 72 66

and a 3rd

Looks like a clear win for New Orleans in this one, but NJ was desperately seeking a QB to take over the Reins while Martin was out injured, it didn't work and they stuck with their original backup, making this trade even worse!

I  DE   72  Robert Dixon          OK   7   0-0    0  75 61 72 81 65 71 62 71

for

1st round pick

A clear win for the Russians in my book!

My Point system I use for player in either Raffie's or Sullivans.  A few notes 1) I modified it slightly from what I used to generate the reports.  2) As you can probably notice I like the guys in the trenches to have slightly better Endurance scores, and Defenses to be a bit more disciplined. 3)  And i would never trade a player for a kicker/Punter of equal value :>

At any rate remember what is written here is just a guideline, use it, modify it or ignore it I leave it up to you, if you have suggestions to make it better, contact me
